GB Rowing 1st Assessment
This weekend saw the first step towards the 2019 Senior and U23 World Championships with the GB Rowing Team 1st Assessment in Boston, Lincolnshire. On Saturday, athletes performed a 2k ergo test with minimum standards required to proceed through to Sunday’s racing.
Brookes had 48 athletes racing across the weekend which included returners from this year’s Senior, U23 and University World Championships. The men’s pair of Rory Gibbs and Morgan Bolding had the highest place finish with 2nd overall, with the scratch pair of Matthew Aldridge and Mikey Dalton finishing in an impressive 5th place. With a number of Brookes crews close behind, the strength in depth of this year’s squad was demonstrated with 10 crews finishing in the top 21.
Olympic medallist Peter Chambers returned from a long layoff through injury with a 2nd place finish in the LM1x, behind his 2017 doubles partner Will Fletcher. Ben Reeves, fresh from a 3rd place finish at Fours’ Head, finished in 12th position.
In the women’s pair, Sophia Heath finished in 6th place with her pairs partner Anna Porteous. Esme Booth and Aly Vogelzang finished in 10th place after an impressive second half.
There were 3 women’s singles racing- Beth Wilford-Dutton finished 22nd in an openweight 1x field stacked with World Medallists. In the lightweight category, Alex Styles finished 15th, with Liz Haskins close behind in 17th.
The squad now focusses on a long winter training block, with Wallingford Head the only race between now and Christmas.
