Wilkes takes Top Spot at GB Trials
The first set of Senior and U23 trials since the Tokyo Olympics were held in Boston, Lincolnshire last weekend. Many were looking to make their mark on the new Olympiad with some promising results.
With many absent from the Tokyo team, it was an opportunity for the “new guard” to put a show on. Oli Wilkes and Harry Glenister (Leander Club) took 1st place on the 5k water assessment by a handful of seconds over 2nd placed Freddie Davidson and Sam Bannister.
Matt Aldridge, without a Pairs partner took to the water in a scull and claimed a very respectable 4th place overall. Jamie Copus was the top ranked lightweight, placing 5th out of all scullers.
On the student side, there were some promising results from a young group of men and women, many of whom were undergoing their first senior trial. Jemima Furness and Martha Birtles were in the mix with the other U23 sweepers; as were Ben Hinves and Jake Wincomb. Some useful experience gained ahead of the rest of the season.
Brookes turn their attention to Fours Head next weekend. There are 12 crews that will take to the Tideway and compete against the top clubs in the country.
