Update on Oxford Brookes University Boat Club investigation (3 April 2025)
Following media reports in late 2024 and complaints from members relating to training methods within Oxford Brookes University Boat Club, the University launched an independent investigation into the concerns raised.
Specialist lawyers at Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP were appointed by the University to conduct an independent investigation and to prepare a report based on their findings. Oxford Brookes can confirm that it has now received this report and carefully considered the issues raised. It has communicated these outcomes to staff and Boat Club members.
The investigation considered whether the materials shared online, and other aspects of the behaviour and culture of the coaching at the Club, are in accordance with the University’s commitment to providing an inclusive and respectful culture in every aspect of university life, and with the law more generally.
The report made a made a number of recommendations that the University has decided to implement in order to: strengthen governance, financial management and data protection practices; provide relevant training for coaches and students in a number of areas to clarify the standards of behaviour expected and improve inclusivity; and improve welfare, student support and communication.
The University continues to examine specific issues relating to certain coaches, some of whom will remain absent from the Club until those matters are fully resolved.
Students seeking support are encouraged to contact the University’s Student Welfare and Support Advice Team or the specialist support staff available within the Sports Department.
The University continues to work with British Rowing to address the concerns that have been raised, and to ensure that Oxford Brookes continues to thrive as a centre of excellence for rowing.
