In only his second season as part of the GB Rowing Senior Team, Rory Gibbs today won the final set of trials before the Tokyo Olympic Games in four months. Gibbs, partnered by Matt Rossiter who he won bronze with at last year’s World Rowing Championships, rowed through the field to take the win ahead of a strong field of World and Olympic medallists all attempting to stake their claim for seats in the Olympic Team. Twelve pairs were entered into the trials, which consisted of a time trial on Friday evening, followed by today’s semi-finals and finals. Following a strong season for the whole squad, the domestic season concluded last week at Henley Royal Regatta, where Brookes qualified 10 crews into the main draw. The Ladies Plate crew completed a hat trick of wins in this event, with new crew members Oliver Wilkes, Brendan Edwards, Jamie Axon taking their first win in the event. The crew had races against U23 crews from Great Britain and The Netherlands in what proved to be one of the most competitive Ladies Plate fields in recent years. BROOKES|Rowing closed 2018 off by extending their course record at Wallingford Head by an impressive 18 seconds, despite unfavourable conditions.  The course, which takes on the Brookes home stretch in Cholsey, takes place from Moulsford Bridge to the OUBC Boathouse at Wallingford Marina. It runs for 4250m and provides coxes and crews with a challenging course to navigate.  In the first division, Brookes filled the top four places in the Men’s Eights despite the 1st VIII only racing in Division 2. In what was a remarkable performance at last week’s Henley Regatta, BROOKES|Rowing won the Ladies’ Plate a day early. They beat crews from Leander Club and a German senior international crew to qualify both crews for Sunday’s final- therefore securing the title for a second year running. Last year’s winners Harry Brightmore, Morgan Bolding, Henry Swarbrick, Matt Aldridge and Rory Gibbs returned to the crew for a second year, and were joined by Temple Cup winners Matt Hnatiw, Sam Nunn and Ed Grisedale, with the crew being rounded off with senior international Quentin Antognelli. The squad returned this week from a packed weekend of racing at BUCS Regatta in Nottingham, where the women’s squad were victorious for the first time ever in the Victor Ludorum, sharing the honours with Newcastle University. The weekend started off strong, where the men defended the BUCS Championship Eights title despite having 10 athletes away in Seattle, USA racing in the Windermere Cup. To top this off, a dominant performance secured the Intermediate Eights category- the fifth time in a row that BROOKES|Rowing has won both titles.
